About the role

Maintains safety and security of patients at all times by assisting nursing staff in the monitoring of patients on emergency petition, with mental-health diagnoses (such as psychiatric conditions and suicidal ideation), as well as behavioral-health issues. Assists in providing a safe environment for cognitively impaired, disoriented, manic, and/or patients who may self-harm. Communicates and collaborates with care-team members to support the provision of safe, high-quality health care. All duties are carried out under the direction, discretion, and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor patients on emergency petition and those with mental-health or behavioral-health diagnoses
  • Assist in creating a safe environment for cognitively impaired, disoriented, manic, or self-harming patients
  • Communicate and collaborate with the care team to ensure high-quality, safe health care
  • Perform duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
  • Carry out additional assigned duties as necessary

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • BLS/CPR certification required
  • Nursing assistant certification preferred
  • Previous experience in an acute healthcare facility with mental-health or psychiatric patients preferred
  • Broad practical understanding of life experience and ability to relate to individuals with behavioral or mental-health disorders
  • Ability to complete required training and demonstrate associated knowledge and skills
  • Proficiency with computers and audiovisual tools (Internet, email, word processing, wireless phone, electronic medical record)
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment
  • Effective English communication skills (reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension)
  • Strong eye-hand coordination
  • Effective problem-solving and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and work well with individuals and teams

Physical Requirements

  • Independently lift patients/patient-care equipment up to 35 pounds
  • Push, pull, and move patients and patient-care equipment
  • Bend body downward at the waist and kneel
  • Utilize a computer for extended periods throughout the shift
  • Perform fine motor skills with both upper extremities

Working Conditions

  • Close visual acuity required for data analysis, transcription, computer work, reading, and visual inspection
  • Ability to identify and distinguish auditory alarms in noisy environments
  • Subject to hazards associated with a hospital environment

Pay

Pay range: $18.00–$20.55 per hour, based on experience, skills, and education.
