Recruitment for 4 part-time positions at San Joaquin County General Hospital. Day and evening shifts are available.

About the role

This position involves registering patients, verifying insurance coverage, and explaining hospital policies and procedures. You will work with patients and their relatives to gather and enter accurate information into the hospital system.

Responsibilities

  • Ask questions of patients and/or relatives to gather and enter information into the hospital system; screen material for completeness and accuracy.
  • Match account numbers with financial codes; verify insurance or Medi-Cal coverage; check insurance ID cards and Medi-Cal labels; verify records for Medicare/Medi-Cal coverage.
  • Obtain signatures on appropriate forms; type ID cards and stamp patients’ records; post or verify information.
  • Explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to patient registration.
  • Direct patients to appropriate offices, clinics, or treatment centers; maintain a system of clinic appointments as needed.
  • Operate standard office machines such as computer terminals, copiers, calculators, and microfiche readers.
  • May act as lead worker, check and review work of others, and train new employees.

Requirements

  • Two years of general office clerical work, including one year of experience gathering financial and personal information from patients and/or families in a doctor’s office, medical clinic, or acute care hospital.
  • One year of business training in an approved school or program may substitute for six months of general clerical experience.

Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Basic Medicare, Medi-Cal, and private insurance eligibility requirements.
  • Layout of San Joaquin General Hospital and location of treatment centers and offices.
  • Public relations techniques and effective guest relations.
  • Filing and record-keeping systems used in patient registration.
  • Language mechanics and office procedures.

Abilities

  • Follow oral and written directions; read and understand job-related materials.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicate effectively and work well under pressure.
  • Deal tactfully with individuals in stressful situations.
  • Match names and numbers accurately.
  • Explain hospital policies, procedures, and regulations to the public.
  • Operate office equipment, including computer terminals.

Pay

Approximate salary range: $22.05 - $26.80 per hour.

  • Life Insurance:
    • 1 but less than 3 years of service: $1,000
    • 3 but less than 5 years of service: $3,000
    • 5 but less than 10 years of service: $5,000
    • 10+ years of service: $10,000
    Employees may purchase additional term life insurance at the group rate.
  • 125 Flexible Benefits Plan: Voluntary program allowing pre-tax dollars for health-related expenses (Health Flexible Spending Account: $2,550 annual limit with $500 carryover) and dependent care costs (Dependent Care Assistance Plan: $5,000 annual limit).
  • Retirement Plan: Covered by the County Retirement Law of 1937. Visit SJCERA for details.
  • Deferred Compensation: Plan under IRS Section 457. Annual contribution limit: $22,500 (or 100% of includible compensation, whichever is less). Individuals age 50+ may contribute up to $30,000. Roth IRA (after-tax) also available.
  • Vacation:
    • Up to 3 years: 10 days/year
    • After 3 years: 15 days/year
    • After 10 years: 20 days/year
    • After 20 years: 23 days/year
  • Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year (details in the appropriate MOU).
  • Sick Leave: 12 working days annually with unlimited accumulation. Eligible for 8 hours of administrative leave if leave balance equals at least half of cumulative accrual and employee is on payroll for the entire calendar year.
  • Bereavement Leave: 3 days of paid leave for the death of a qualifying family member; 2 additional days for the death of a spouse, domestic partner, parent, or child.
  • Merit Salary Increase: After 52 weeks (2,080 hours) at each step, eligible for an increase to the next step.
  • Educational Reimbursement Program: Up to $850 per fiscal year for career-related coursework. Up to $1,600 per fiscal year for approved 4-year college/university programs ($800 per semester).
  • Parking Supplemental: County contributes up to $20 per pay period for employees who pay for parking and work in Downtown Stockton.
  • School Activities Leave: Up to 40 hours per year (max 8 hours/month) to participate in children’s school activities.
