Patient Registration Clerk
About the role

This role reports to the Business Services Office Director.
Responsibilities
- Greet and register patients
- Complete patient paperwork
- Answer telephones
- Collect co-pays
- Schedule appointments for patients
- Perform general office functions as needed
- Accurately enter patient and insurance information into the E.H.R. system
- Identify issues involving patient demographics and insurance eligibility and escalate to management as needed
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and patient share of cost for certain office visits and procedures with third-party and governmental payers upon scheduling
- Obtain pre-authorization as required by third-party insurance and governmental payers
- Negotiate payment plans for patients who cannot afford payment in full using sliding fee scales
- Accurately apply sliding fee scales
- Complete good faith estimate
- Perform financial counseling with patients to ensure they are aware of their insurance coverage and financial responsibility
- Serve as a patient advocate ensuring patients are aware of and take advantage of governmental programs such as Medi-Cal, IEHP, etc., as well as sliding fee discounts based on family size and income
- Reconcile billing at the end of patient visit
- Respond to billing department inquiries and effectively address questions and concerns expressed by patients and other staff
- Manage in-person medical record release requests and scanning processes
- Prepare end-of-day reports for manager review
- Accept and process payment transactions according to established guidelines
- Schedule follow-up appointments as needed
- Handle sensitive patient issues tactfully in a calm and professional manner
- Communicate updates to patients, keeping them informed of wait times
- Maintain less than 3% error rate
- Assist with patient portal

You will be occasionally required to stand, walk, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- A minimum of 6 months of experience in customer service or healthcare
- Insurance verification experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- Experience with electronic medical records programs preferred
