About the role

Responsibilities
- Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry.
- If assigned to a closed unit, provide constant observation only for safety for three to four patients.
- Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.
- Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing.
- Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
- Follow protocols and initiate CPR and other emergency measures as required.
- Acknowledge patient concerns and needs and notify appropriate staff for assistance.
- Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation
- Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs
Preferred qualifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
Physical Requirements
- Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
