Patient Care Technician / Unit Secretary- Medical Pulmonary Unit - Days

About the role

The Patient Care Technician - Medical Pulmonary Unit position is a combination role of Patient Care Technician and Unit Secretary. The role may be used in both capacities depending on unit needs.

Responsibilities

• Enters specific patient treatments, charges to facilitate management of the patient healthcare record
• Aids the care team in coordinating patient activities and services
• Aids in coordinating communication and resources between care team, physicians, patients and family members
• Assists patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc., under the supervision of a RN/LPN
• Assists with exercising and ambulating patient; utilizes correct body mechanics while assisting with patient mobility; maintains physical safety and comfort of patient under supervision of a RN/LPN
• Obtains patient vital signs, input and output checks, and accu-checks, and reports abnormalities to the nurse
• As directed by RN/LPN, performs procedures such as EKG’s, perineal care, emptying of foley bags, application of restraints, backrubs, etc.
• Collects specimens such as urine, feces, sputum, and delivers as necessary
• Documents basic patient care into electronic medical record
• Aids nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating, transporting, and observing patients to ensure safety as directed
• Adequately answers unit phones and can effectively direct phone calls to the appropriate parties
• May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited CNA course and the successful completion of the CNA certification exam, EMT or paramedics training course, or current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with the completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation
• Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association

Qualifications

• Completion of high school

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks
• Knowledge of medical terminology and patient care protocols
• Basic computer skills, including proficiency in using electronic medical records systems
