Patient Care Technician Senior, Emergency Department

UPMC East is seeking a full-time Patient Care Technician Senior to support the Emergency Department in a fast-paced environment while delivering high-quality patient care. This role offers opportunities for personal skill-building, professional development, and continued education.

Schedule

Full-time position with 3, 12-hour rotating shifts per week. Start times are 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

Responsibilities

  • Suggest and support departmental changes; view problems as challenges.
  • Demonstrate awareness of behavior on department efficiency and support department-based projects and quality initiatives.
  • Establish professional and respectful interpersonal relationships and contribute to universal unit activities (e.g., responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, transporting patients).
  • Perform core nursing assistant responsibilities:
    • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning.
    • Vital signs, intake & output (I&O), blood glucose monitoring, weights, specimen collection, Foley care.
  • Perform advanced clinical tasks (based on department need):
    • Phlebotomy
    • 12-lead EKG
    • Simple dressings
    • Foley catheter insertion/removal
    • IV insertion/removal and dressing change
    • Bladder scan
    • Femoral hemostasis
    • Telemetry monitor application/reapplication
    • NG tube clamping/removal
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provide feedback to RN and report changes in patient status.
  • Instruct patients and families under RN direction.
  • Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per protocol.
  • Transport cardiac-monitored patients within the hospital.
  • May be present in rooms where medications are stored or transport medications between departments.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information.
  • Comply with safety policies and standard precautions; document in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Demonstrate clear and effective communication with all healthcare team members.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally.
  • Constructively receive feedback and identify learning needs.
  • Participate in self-review, committee, and project work; report equipment malfunctions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One of the following:
    • 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR
    • 1 year of healthcare experience and enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
    • 1 year of healthcare experience and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution (to be determined after hire).
  • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class and basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Nursing student who has completed one clinical rotation.
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • CPR required based on AHA standards (didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • CCMC required within 60 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC).
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (with renewal).
  • Act 33 (with renewal).
  • Act 34 (with renewal).
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal).
