About the Role

Christopher Newport University seeks an Assistant Director, Human Resources Operations to oversee and manage the daily operations of the HR department, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of HR services across the Main Campus in Newport News, Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Oversee HR operations including benefits administration, payroll coordination, and HRIS management
• Supervise HR staff and provide guidance on complex employee relations matters
• Develop and implement HR policies and procedures in compliance with federal and state regulations
• Manage recruitment and onboarding processes for classified and wage positions
• Coordinate performance management programs and staff development initiatives
• Serve as a strategic partner to university leadership on workforce planning and organizational development
• Ensure data integrity and reporting compliance for all HR systems and records

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR management experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of employment laws and regulatory compliance
• Experience with HRIS platforms and data analysis
• Supervisory experience with proven leadership capabilities
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in HR or related field
• HR certification (SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR)
• Experience in higher education or public sector environment
• Familiarity with Commonwealth of Virginia HR policies and procedures

Pay

Salary range: $105,933 to $135,000 (AP 8)
