Patient Care Technician-PCT

Overview

Fresenius Medical Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) to support and collaborate with Registered Nurses (RNs) in providing dialysis treatment to several patients at a time. This role involves prepping and testing equipment, reviewing treatment sheets, and opening clinics early in the morning.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and supporting the organization's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Patient Related:
• Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis therapy and disease processes.
• Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin.
• Initiate and monitor dialysis treatment, document vital signs, and ensure proper disconnection of treatment.
• Evaluate patients' vascular access, document findings, and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled.
• Ensure all blood spills are cleaned promptly, prepare and organize supplies, and monitor patients' self-care.
• Staff Related:
• Aid in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs.
• Maintain environmental integrity and cleanliness, follow infection control policies, and reinforce education for patients and families.
• Record Keeping:
• Complete and document participation in CQI activities, enter treatment data accurately and timely, review treatment sheets, and prepare initial patient charts.
• Infection Control:
• Support staff and patients in adhering to infection control practices.
• Transitional Care Unit:
• Follow patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, coordinate transitional care, and assist with supply ordering and inventory management.
• Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
• Requires desk and personal computer work, interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians, and travel between facilities.
• May involve heavy lifting and moving of patients, requiring frequent bending, standing, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
• Education and Licenses:
• High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
