Patient Care Technician - Part Time Days - Emergency Department

About the Role

As a bedside caregiver, you will provide a phenomenal patient experience by anticipating the needs of patients such as providing drinks, assisting with meal ordering, encouraging walking, assisting with baths, and providing clean linens and gowns. Our Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) have compassion for our patients, a caring bedside manner, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

You will provide clinical assistance to the bedside RN by obtaining vital signs and reporting abnormalities or changes in a patient's behavior to detect and provide rapid treatment. A PCT ensures patient safety by utilizing safety measures such as gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and staying within arm's reach of patients when moving around.

Responsibilities

• Anticipate and fulfill patient needs, including providing drinks, assisting with meal ordering, encouraging mobility, and assisting with personal hygiene.
• Obtain and monitor vital signs, reporting any abnormalities or behavioral changes to the primary RN or charge nurse.
• Ensure patient safety through the use of gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity during movement.
• Perform physically demanding and repetitious tasks while maintaining attention to detail and organization.
• Apply principles of infection control, personal hygiene, and aseptic techniques to prevent infection.
• Exercise judgment and initiative in resolving problems while managing a high workload under time constraints.
• Maintain constant mental awareness and concentration despite frequent interruptions and variable noise levels.

Requirements

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the AHA or completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty.
• Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served.
• Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
• Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to read, perform basic math, and organize tasks efficiently.
• Knowledge of principles of good personal hygiene and aseptic techniques.
• Ability to perform physically demanding, repetitious movements.
