Patient Care Technician – Medical / Surgical

About the role

Sentara is hiring a Patient Care Technician for the Med/Surg 4 West Unit at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. This is a part-time, night-shift position (approximately 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM).

4 West is a 24-bed inpatient nursing unit providing quality care to adult medical/surgical telemetry patients who are acutely ill or injured. The unit specializes in post-operative surgical patient care, including:

• General surgery (emergent and elective, including DaVinci Robotic surgery for colon, urology, and gynecology)
• Urology (TURB, continuous bladder irrigation, stent placement)
• Gynecology surgeries (bladder/colon resections)
• Vascular (amputations, femoral popliteal bypass, fistulas)
• Mastectomies and breast reconstruction
• Soft tissue traumas (gunshot/stab wounds, MVAs, chest tubes)

The medical population includes patients with:

• Diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colitis, fistulas (e.g., colorectal)
• Kidney injury (acute and chronic)
• Sepsis, pneumonia, asthma, diabetes

Patient Care Technicians are unlicensed staff members who work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Responsibilities include providing patient care, supporting admissions and discharge processes, and complying with patient safety practices. You will observe patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report changes to the nurse.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• One of the following certifications or qualifications:
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
  • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
  • Emergency Services certification (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic)
  • Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) with at least one semester completed in RN, LPN, RT, or PT
  • Current work experience within the last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant
• American Health Associate BLS Certification (required within 90 days of hire)
• One year of prior healthcare experience preferred
