About the role
Geisinger is offering a $1500 sign-on bonus for eligible Patient Care Technician candidates, with a minimum hiring rate of $18.94. Experienced individuals may earn higher rates, and shift differentials of up to $3 are available for evening, night, and weekend shifts. Additionally, Geisinger provides up to $40,000 in financial support for employees pursuing a nursing career.
The role involves performing a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care and unit environment in accordance with policies and procedures. The position is located at CH2 Children's Hospital, Infant Toddler Medical Surgical Unit.
Responsibilities
- Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse, including advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley Catheter, and peripheral IV.
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens following Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Manage daily aspects of breast milk, infant, and pediatric formula storage, preparation, and delivery.
- Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record.
- Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of patients according to established standards; report changes in patient condition to licensed personnel promptly.
- Obtain and maintain specimen integrity according to policy and physician orders.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene and changing linens.
- Provide one-to-one patient safety watch as assigned, following established policies and procedures.
- Accurately process and transport specimens to the laboratory.
- Perform point-of-care testing and instrument maintenance, including quality control.
- Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and taking corrective measures for equipment and supplies.
- Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students.
- Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths; facilitate patient throughput activities.
- Transcribe and process orders according to unit standards; release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
- Coordinate patient transportation to multiple tests.
- Schedule tests, fax consults, and assist in obtaining and communicating electronic information pertinent to the nursing unit.
- Order supplies, including stationery, floor stock, and individual nursing supplies.
- Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
- Operate, troubleshoot, and schedule maintenance for clerical equipment such as computers, fax machines, and phones.
- Transport non-controlled medications and blood products as needed.
- Conduct discharge follow-up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointments.
- Support staff with 5-minute drills, quality rounds, and regulatory readiness.

Qualifications

Schedule
- Three 12-hour shifts: Day (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) or Night (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), including every other weekend and holiday.
- Required orientation: Two-week classroom schedule, Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
- No prior experience required; comprehensive on-the-job training provided.
