Patient Care Technician (Advanced Acute Care Units) - No CNA Cert Required - Night Shift

Geisinger is proud to offer a $1,500 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates, an $18.94 minimum hiring rate with increased rates for experienced individuals, and up to $3 shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts. Additionally, we provide up to $40,000 in financial support to become a nurse.

Geisinger is piloting the ACE Nursing Model of Care on our Advanced Acute Care Units at our Danville, Bloomsburg, and Shamokin campuses. This model utilizes more Patient Care Technicians to perform duties that do not require a nursing license, offering greater career advancement, autonomy, and involvement in patient care.

Responsibilities

• Primary facilitator of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals
• Collect vital signs and daily weights
• Conduct Point of Care testing
• Turn and reposition patients
• Perform equipment checks and exchanges
• Provide dressing care
• Remove Foley Catheters and Peripheral IVs
• Remove nasogastric tubes and perform nasal swabs
• Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets
• Perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
• Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, including advanced dressing care, suctioning, and removal of Foley Catheters and peripheral IVs
• Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines
• Handle daily aspects of the storage, preparation, and delivery of breast milk, infant, and pediatric formulas
• Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record
• Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of the patient according to established standards; report changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner
• Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, per physician order
• Assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated responsibilities for ongoing continuum of care, including patient hygiene and changing linens
• Provide one-to-one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures
• Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of specimens to the laboratory
• Perform point of care patient testing and instrument maintenance and quality control
• Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies
• Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students
• Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards; facilitate patient throughput activities
• Transcribe and process orders according to unit standards
• Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments
• Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests
• Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information pertinent to the nursing unit; schedule tests, fax consults, etc.
• Assist in ordering supplies, including stationery items, floor stock, patient needs, and individual nursing supplies
• Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets
• Operate, problem-solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment, including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, and phones
• Transport non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed
• Transport blood products to and from Blood Bank as needed
• Make discharge follow-up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointment teams
• Support and assist staff with 5-minute drills and/or Quality Rounds; participate in regulatory readiness as needed

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) - Required
• Graduate from Specialty Training Program - Preferred
• Minimum of 1 year of related work experience - Required

Schedule

• Three 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), including every other weekend and holiday
• Required orientation: Two consecutive weeks of classroom orientation (Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM) in Danville, PA at the start of employment

No experience is needed; comprehensive on-the-job training is provided.
