Responsibilities

  • Takes the patient's blood pressure, checks their oxygen levels and temperature
  • Assists patients with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs
  • Provides nursing care that includes one-on-one care of patients on suicide or safety precautions
  • Performs basic nursing care and advanced technical skills for specified age groups
  • Transports patients, supplies, specimens, equipment, etc. within the facility
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities
  • Supports department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments
  • Reviews medical records for outstanding orders and notifies nurses of stat orders and medication changes
  • Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies
  • Operates and maintains general office equipment
  • Follows procedures for timely equipment repairs
  • Welcomes and assists patients and visitors; assists with registration
  • Serves as “face” of the unit; role models service excellence behaviors at all times
  • Monitors cleanliness of the waiting and break rooms, and performs safety/environmental rounds on unit and with multidisciplinary team members
  • May be responsible for phlebotomy, wound care dressings, saline lock replacement, and colostomy bag changes
  • Supports multiple nursing units, interacts with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public
  • Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality
  • May be required to support multiple nursing units
  • Functions as a key member of the health care team and performs tasks as delegated by licensed staff
  • Interacts with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education required
  • Previous experience in direct patient care preferred
  • Certified Nursing Assistant preferred if working in a critical access facility
  • AHA BLS-HCP required within 6 months of hire

Qualifications

  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills required
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position
