Patient Care Technician - 5 West Unit - PT

5 West is a 26-bed medical-surgical unit specializing in the medical treatment and recovery of patients with complex IV drug-related infections requiring up to six weeks of medical recovery. The unit is often called "The Hope Unit" by patients. You will be part of a special multidisciplinary team including therapists, addiction-specialist physicians, peer recovery specialists, psychiatric technicians, and others passionate about helping patients who have often lost hope for the future.
This position is part-time, working the night shift with every other weekend and rotating holidays.
Responsibilities
- Provide basic nursing care, including taking blood pressure, checking oxygen levels and temperature, and assisting patients with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs.
- Provide one-on-one care for patients on suicide or safety precautions.
- Perform basic clerical and technical clinical services relating to patient care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort for patients of all ages.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living and document/report observations to licensed staff.
- Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility.
- Contribute to performance improvement activities and participate in unit quality surveillance.
- Exhibit competent knowledge of EMR and assist with chart audits.
- Participate in unit shared governance, organization councils/committees, and unit huddles; lead huddles and participate in interdepartmental patient rounds (IDRs).
- Support department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
- Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of stat orders and medication changes.
- Order, stock, and organize department/unit supplies and equipment.
- Assist with customer service, including way-finding, answering phones, and making meaningful connections with patients and visitors.
- Process equipment between patients (clean unit-based equipment and gather supplies).
- Operate and maintain general office equipment; follow procedures for timely equipment repairs.
- Lead streamlined, timely, and comprehensive admission, transfer, and discharge processes with a focus on patient experience.
- Assist in coordination of patient flow using department/unit-specific software and Intranet.
- Promote process improvement initiatives that add value to unit outcomes and/or organizational mission.
- Welcome and assist patients and visitors; serve as the "face" of the unit and role model service excellence.
- Demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals.
- Monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms; perform safety/environmental rounds with multidisciplinary team members.
- Participate in the sitter process (if competencies appropriate).
- Assist with maintaining regulatory compliance (e.g., refrigerator checks, glucose meters, equipment room storage, code cart checks).
- Perform phlebotomy, nonsterile wound care dressings, saline lock replacement/removal, and colostomy bag changes (competency appropriate).
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred; required if working in a critical access facility.
- AHA BLS-HCP certification required within 6 months of hire.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position.
- Must attend mandatory orientation classes during daytime hours (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm) for the first 2 weeks.

- May be required to sit with patients on suicide precautions or confusion.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous/hazardous materials, regulated medical wastes, and combative patients.
- Prolonged periods of sitting, visualizing computer screens, and using keyboards may be necessary.
- May be required to work at multiple Carilion facilities or support multiple nursing units.

Pay
Compensation range: $17.39 - $24.35 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
