About the Role

A Patient Care Technician is a professional employee with strong clerical and clinical experience who, under the direction of the Emergency Room RN/Acute Care RN, performs clerical, registration duties as well as provides care to designated patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical and registration duties in the Emergency Room.
  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Operate and maintain various medical equipment (e.g., EKG machine, glucometer, vital check machine, cardiac monitors, defibrillator, infusion pumps).
  • Assist with patient lifting, moving, and transfers.
  • Respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, regulatory agencies, and community members.
  • Manage stressful situations and handle conflict effectively.
  • Organize tasks with attention to detail and work independently.
  • Handle pressure of meeting deadlines while maintaining accuracy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma with emphasis on business courses.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • Current certification as a paramedic and/or EMT; and/or one year of clinical experience with an ambulance service; and/or one year of clinical experience as an ER technician, CNA, or Medical Office Assistant; and/or successful completion of first year or clinical work in a nursing program.
  • Ability to follow procedures and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic mathematical skills and computer experience (desirable).
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Required to maintain continued registry in relevant professional associations.

Physical Demands

  • Standing and walking 50-55% of the time; sitting 45-50% of the time.
  • Lifting and/or moving patients of all ages, sizes, and weights.
  • Hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, functional visual ability, and depth perception.
  • Color vision to perceive changes in patient’s skin color and colors of medicines/solutions.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, or kneel.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
  • Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.

Mental Demands

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret medical records, scientific journals, and legal documents.
  • Manage stressful situations, handle conflict, and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Organize tasks with attention to detail and apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Work independently, plan tasks, and deal with critical or tense situations that may cause psychological stress.

Working Conditions

  • Moderate to high noise level and activity in the work environment.
  • Exposure to unpredictable patient behaviors, noise distractions, and prolonged computer terminal use (eyestrain, repetitive motions).
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable and infectious diseases.

Equipment Used

  • Computer, telephone system, printer, copier, facsimile machine, calculator.
  • EKG machine, pulse oximeter, cardiac monitors, external pacemaker, crash cart, defibrillator, infusion pumps, glucometer, vital check machine, tympanic thermometer.
  • Medical, surgical, and emergency supplies; patient charts; call bell system.

Position Type: Part-time | Shift: Night with rotation as needed.
