About the role

The Patient Care Coordinator II is a full-time position within Tulane University Medical Group. This Coordinator schedules ambulatory and inpatient care with hospitals, ambulatory facilities, and post-acute care facilities when a clinical service is determined to be needed by a patient. The role involves verifying patient insurance and benefits, obtaining required authorizations from private, commercial, and government carriers, and working with insurance companies to meet specific information requirements for services. The Coordinator answers insurance questions, confirms service schedules, and resolves issues during the authorization process and follow-up. This position is critical to ensuring physician billing and claims are processed efficiently for quick review and payment.

Responsibilities

  • Verify patient eligibility, benefits, and referral authorizations.
  • Process claims and authorizations for private, commercial, and government insurance carriers.
  • Apply knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9/10, HCPCS, and CPT codes.
  • Utilize EMR software for patient account management.
  • Navigate managed care and health insurance payment processes.
  • Manage a high volume of patient flow with confidence.
  • Prepare written correspondence summarizing patient healthcare and services delivered.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, third-party payors, and internal teams.
  • Follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Use MS Excel and MS Word proficiently.
  • Work independently within a team setting.
  • Navigate multiple software applications and websites.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all work performed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years’ experience using an electronic patient account system for third-party insurance eligibility verification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of medical practice operations, including physician clinics, post-acute care facilities, hospital services, and patient registration.
  • Experience in a Hospitalist practice.
