About the Role
The role involves handling phone calls, facilitating informational requests, and managing patient appointments and care coordination in a neurology clinic setting.
Responsibilities
- Answer, analyze, and triage telephone requests, routing calls or messages as appropriate.
- Schedule patient appointments, diagnostic testing, and referrals using computerized systems.
- Assist patients with appointments and coordinate provider orders.
- Greet patients warmly and professionally, updating patient information as necessary.
- Complete paperwork for insurance pre-authorization and route to assigned areas.
- Collect and route patient copayments according to clinic procedures.
- Coordinate provider orders for further services, referrals, and follow-up appointments.
- Facilitate hospital admission orders as necessary.
- Assist physicians and professional staff with patient care, including rooming patients and providing support in exam rooms.
- Collaborate with physicians to relay instructions and medical advice to patients.
- Participate in practice improvements by identifying workflow opportunities and implementing changes.
- Clean and stock exam rooms.
- Review, code, and process charge tickets for accuracy and timely submission.
- Obtain hospital billing information, review, and code for submission.
- Obtain authorizations from insurance companies, employers, and carriers for testing, referrals, and visits.
- Assist patients with insurance forms and pre-certify hospital admissions.
- Retrieve, update, and file medical records according to clinic policies.
- Establish and organize new patient medical records.
- Obtain authorizations for releasing patient information and route records requests.
- Direct patient correspondence (test results, referral letters) to providers and maintain files.
- Perform clerical duties, including printing and distributing schedules, processing medication refills, and collecting data for outcome studies.
- Retrieve and distribute mail and order supplies as necessary.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- One year of previous medical office experience.
- Accurate and precise reading and writing skills.
Skills
- Patient-centered with a strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities, deadlines, and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work independently, exhibit mature judgment, and make sound decisions.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-9/CPT coding.
- Good human relations and organizational skills.
- Typing speed of 45 words per minute.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
