About the role

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) works under the direction of the Registered Nurse. PCAs collect patient data, provide personal care, perform point-of-care testing (e.g., whole blood glucose), assist with patient mobility, and support the caregiving team in delivering competent, compassionate care. The PCA also helps maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collects pertinent patient data (vital signs, height, weight) and reports abnormal findings to the RN and care team.
  • Participates in care planning and nursing report processes, incorporating patient/family rights in decision-making.
  • Uses standardized techniques to keep patients and families informed about care.
  • Promotes a clean, orderly, and safe environment using infection control techniques and standard precautions.
  • Communicates patient progress toward goals and outcomes to the RN.
  • Documents all care in the patient record.
  • Assists in delivering patient care as part of the caregiving team.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. (required).
  • Less than 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting or completion of a certified nurse assistant course (preferred).
  • Experience as a paramedic or emergency technician (preferred).
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology (medium proficiency).
  • Honest, punctual, and adheres to ethical conduct standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.

Physical Demands

  • Constantly: Standing, walking, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Frequently: Lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping.
  • Occasionally: Pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crawling.
  • Rarely: Sitting.
