About the role
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) supports nursing staff in delivering patient care, performing clerical tasks, maintaining the unit environment, and managing equipment. Essential duties include responding to patient needs, documenting care, ensuring safety, and communicating effectively.
Responsibilities
- Responds to patient calls within 10 minutes and anticipates patient needs.
- Makes rounds to reduce patient calls and maintains positive interactions with patients and visitors.
- Provides necessary data to RNs and collaborates in implementing patient care plans.
- Performs essential skills to ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Documents all care provided, including vital signs, intake and output, and patient care.
- Communicates with RNs and Charge Nurses about patient conditions and care needs.
- Ensures the unit is in compliance with regulatory requirements and maintains patient confidentiality.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate from an accredited Certified Nursing Program (grandfathered for those hired/transferred before 8/2016).
- Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification (grandfathered for those hired/transferred before 8/2016).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training certification (required within LA City only).
Qualifications
- One year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- Preferred certifications include CPR, ACLS, and PALS.
Skills
- Effective communication skills.
- Strong organizational and documentation abilities.
- Knowledge of patient care procedures and safety protocols.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and maintain a calm demeanor under pressure.
