About the role

Helps patients by transporting them into, around, and out of the health care organization. Warmly greets patients and visitors, providing directions to facilities and escorting members or visitors when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients by assisting them from their vehicles (do not lift patients from their vehicles).
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics when lifting and transferring patients to and from wheelchairs.
  • Responds to all transport requests with a sense of urgency.
  • Ensures the safe, timely, and accurate transport of patients to their destination, including bringing the proper requested equipment if necessary.
  • Comforts patients and their families by being attentive, offering support and encouragement, being punctual, and demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
  • Only engages in appropriate conversation involving the patient.
  • Notifies nursing personnel, clinician, technician, or reception upon arrival for patient.
  • Alerts nursing staff immediately to any signs of patient distress or equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with federal and state legal regulations.
  • Collects and returns wheelchairs to the proper holding areas.
  • Maintains equipment and reports equipment needing repairs.
  • Disinfects transport equipment before and after use.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational and training opportunities.
  • Assists with all other duties as assigned.
  • Introduces self and role to patients and visitors.
  • Demonstrates knowledge about the job to serve others effectively.
  • Offers assistance to others (e.g., "How may I help you?").
  • Follows through on commitments and takes initiative to help.
  • Communicates clearly what patients, customers, and co-workers can expect and follows through.
  • Practices active listening (e.g., makes eye contact, validates understanding).
  • Addresses customers as Mr., Mrs., or Ms. unless invited to do otherwise; avoids terms of endearment.
  • Takes accountability for work.
  • Speaks clearly using understandable language (avoids medical jargon or slang).
  • Summarizes key information and provides written materials when possible.
  • Validates understanding to ensure clarity.
  • Demonstrates appropriate body language and tone of voice.
  • Answers phone calls with a salutation, introduction, and offer to assist (e.g., "Good afternoon, this is [your name], how may I help you?").
  • Speaks positively about work, co-workers, and the organization.
  • Avoids gossip and negativity.
  • Offers to answer additional questions from patients or co-workers.
  • Informs patients and co-workers of how and when to contact you under normal and unforeseen circumstances.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Patient transport or patient care hospital experience strongly preferred.
  • Exhibits excellent verbal and listening skills.
  • Able to utilize a telephone and two-way radio properly.
  • Knowledge of basic patient transport concepts, infection control practices, and proper body mechanics.
  • Able to navigate the Palm Springs facility.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr. Individual compensation offered within this range will depend on factors such as qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, and internal equity.
