Responsibilities

  • Work with all Self-Pay accounts.
  • Complete financial counseling paperwork for afternoon Outpatient accounts and ensure demographics and insurance are correct and verified.
  • Accurately explain and educate patients about their financial responsibility at or before discharge.
  • Talk with patients or guarantors to collect the full self-pay amount or estimated out-of-pocket amount.
  • Negotiate payment plans; screen patients expressing financial need or inability to pay; perform follow-up on all self-pay after insurance accounts.
  • Verify insurance, credit reports, Medicare, and additional data for patient admissions.
  • Enter insurance and billing information into the system for patients being admitted into the outpatient program.
  • Prioritize self-pay follow-up as appropriate, but no less than every 30 days.
  • Upload paperwork into MS4 and Midas system.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Excellent telephone skills.
  • Working knowledge of insurance terms, and reimbursement procedures, medical terminology, and hospital services.
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner and communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, supervisor, and other hospital employees in person and over the telephone.
  • Provide assistance in the area of credit, collection, and patient billing operations to maintain hospital policy and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Skill in the operation of office equipment.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or GED; College degree preferred.
  • Experience: One to Two years’ experience in a medical office or hospital business office setting, preferably including working with billing healthcare entities such as Medicare, Medicaid, Commercial and Private Pay.
  • Licensure/Certification: CPR/CPI certification required.
  • Other: Basic reading, writing and mathematics skills; good telephone and oral communication skills; legible handwriting; ability to concentrate on tasks in high traffic area; ability to maintain information as highly confidential; meet deadlines; good organization and priority setting skills; preferred basic data entry skills with some computer experience; strong customer service skills; empathy; attention to detail.
