About the role
We are looking for a Patient Access Representative to join our team at Black Hills Surgical Hospital in Rapid City, SD. This part-time position focuses on creating a welcoming and safe environment for patients while delivering high-quality care in a fast-paced setting. The ideal candidate is outgoing, detail-oriented, and possesses exceptional customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients and verify demographics to accurately register and/or schedule appointments.
- Create electronic files, provide and scan necessary forms, and route documents.
- Educate patients, capture signatures, and assign financial responsibility while adhering to policies.
- Collect co-payments, pre-payments, and payments on account balances.
- Resolve registration work queue issues, including errors, denied insurance claims, and database maintenance.
- Schedule patient appointments, procedures, and coordinate referrals and pre-authorizations.
- Arrange interpreter services, check patients in/out, and offer enrollment to additional resources.
- Collaborate with nursing teams and providers to coordinate appointments and manage recall/waitlists.
- Operate multi-line telephones and, depending on location, serve as a switchboard operator.
- Perform additional duties such as chart preparation, provider document organization, and financial assistance coordination.
- Initiate prior authorizations, track patient visits, and manage health information on patient accounts.
- Work on weekly and monthly reports, compile and distribute assessments, and coordinate Telemed appointments.
- Handle charge entry/billing, charge verification, reminder calls, and hospital admissions.
- Mentor new Patient Access Representatives and promote a cooperative, respectful atmosphere.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and use professional written communication.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Post-secondary education is helpful.
- One year of work experience, preferably in a medical office setting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful.
- Six months of customer service experience (desired).
- BLS certification may be required for certain locations/settings.
- Ability to multitask, work independently, and as part of a team.
- Strong empathy and customer service skills.
Schedule
- Part-time, 20 hours per week.
- Shift: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday with occasional Saturday shifts.
Pay
Salary range: $16.25 - $23.00 per hour.
