About the role

We are looking for a Patient Access Representative to join our team at Black Hills Surgical Hospital in Rapid City, SD. This part-time position focuses on creating a welcoming and safe environment for patients while delivering high-quality care in a fast-paced setting. The ideal candidate is outgoing, detail-oriented, and possesses exceptional customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and verify demographics to accurately register and/or schedule appointments.
  • Create electronic files, provide and scan necessary forms, and route documents.
  • Educate patients, capture signatures, and assign financial responsibility while adhering to policies.
  • Collect co-payments, pre-payments, and payments on account balances.
  • Resolve registration work queue issues, including errors, denied insurance claims, and database maintenance.
  • Schedule patient appointments, procedures, and coordinate referrals and pre-authorizations.
  • Arrange interpreter services, check patients in/out, and offer enrollment to additional resources.
  • Collaborate with nursing teams and providers to coordinate appointments and manage recall/waitlists.
  • Operate multi-line telephones and, depending on location, serve as a switchboard operator.
  • Perform additional duties such as chart preparation, provider document organization, and financial assistance coordination.
  • Initiate prior authorizations, track patient visits, and manage health information on patient accounts.
  • Work on weekly and monthly reports, compile and distribute assessments, and coordinate Telemed appointments.
  • Handle charge entry/billing, charge verification, reminder calls, and hospital admissions.
  • Mentor new Patient Access Representatives and promote a cooperative, respectful atmosphere.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and use professional written communication.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Post-secondary education is helpful.
  • One year of work experience, preferably in a medical office setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful.
  • Six months of customer service experience (desired).
  • BLS certification may be required for certain locations/settings.
  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Strong empathy and customer service skills.

Schedule

  • Part-time, 20 hours per week.
  • Shift: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday with occasional Saturday shifts.

Pay

Salary range: $16.25 - $23.00 per hour.
