Job Requirements

The Patient Access Representative I position at the University of Maryland Rehab and Orthopedic is located at 2200 Kernan Drive, Baltimore, MD 21207. This full-time, day shift position operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Principal Responsibilities And Tasks

  • Fulfills the first point of contact for patients and visitors entering the facilities, ensuring all aspects of customer service are met.
  • Collects and verifies patient and insurance demographics, reviews benefits in Epic, provides cost estimates, secures pre-certifications and/or pre-notifications for patient services, collects co-pays and deposits, and offers financial assistance to patients.
  • Provides wayfinding to all clinics and assists with registration assistance, maintaining awareness of clinic locations to safely and efficiently guide patients to their appointments.
  • Maintains regulatory and functional knowledge of all registration information required to ensure timely and accurate reporting/billing, obtaining all necessary signatures, and performing clerical duties as needed.
  • Educates patients on adequate insurance coverage, understands applicable hospital and physician billing requirements, and communicates proper procedures and requirements to patients.
  • Communicates coverage issues to service areas and works with patients and staff to resolve them.
  • Affirms accuracy and completion of paperwork before filing admissions, assisting with incomplete patient registration paperwork, distributing admission documents if required, and maintaining department scheduling templates for applicable providers in outpatient department locations.
  • Ensures compliance with pre-admission and pre-certification requirements by maintaining consistent contact with the Care Management team and Social Work departments.
  • Assists the supervisor in training new Admitting staff by demonstrating department operating processes and procedures.

Work Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • One year of work experience in a clerical, customer service, or receptionist position, preferably in a healthcare setting, is required. Two years' experience is preferred.
