About the role

Responsible for the registration of all patients accessing services, with emphasis on patient access and satisfaction, insurance and demographic verification, accuracy, and point-of-service collection. Maintains confidentiality, professionalism, and ethics continuously.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately register all patients while maintaining regulatory and functional knowledge of required information to ensure timely and accurate reporting and billing.
  • Distribute patient-related materials and obtain patient or designee’s signature on necessary consents, permits, financial forms, and charity applications when applicable.
  • Collect patient-owed cost-sharing amounts (copays, deductibles, coinsurance, full costs for non-covered/self-pay) in accordance with service standards. Refer patients to financial assistance when applicable. Perform end-of-day cash-out procedures and document all collections.
  • Perform order entry for services including Observation, Laboratory, Radiology, Therapy, and Physician services. Reconcile ordered services with applicable departments to prevent revenue loss.
  • Acquire precertification status for applicable services such as Same Day Surgery, Outpatient Radiology and Cardiology Tests, Physician Services, or Pharmacy Services.
  • Coordinate with Nursing Services to efficiently use available beds (inpatient, observation, and skilled) while adhering to registration and order entry standards.
  • Manage centralized scheduling for the System using applicable databases, ensuring proper departments and physicians receive relevant information and maximizing schedule capacity.
  • Utilize insurance verification tools to accurately verify patients’ insurance information and maintain an error rate in accordance with service standards.
  • Serve as the primary Switchboard Operator during shifts when required, including answering incoming calls, directing the public, coordinating "codes," and maintaining clergy files.
  • Perform mail distribution, preparation, inventory, restocking, and chart retrieval as needed.
  • Work beyond normal scheduled shifts to provide high-quality patient care and comply with the System’s attendance policy. Assist in staff training and attend mandatory educational, compliance, and safety programs.
  • Demonstrate the importance of satisfying patient and customer needs by interacting in a friendly, caring, and attentive manner, maintaining communication to provide a secure and pleasant experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of six months prior healthcare, finance, collection, or billing experience preferred.
  • Experience with computer applications required; medical terminology and coding experience beneficial.
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to relate well with professionals, patients, and others in the System.
  • Must be polite, courteous, and trustworthy in safeguarding confidential information.

Expectations

  • Set daily goals and track progress using a goal sheet.
  • Submit ideas or revisions if daily goals are not met.
  • Participate in mandatory education and training.
  • Demonstrate accountability in all responsibilities.

Physical Demands

  • Light physical activity in an emergency room environment (as applicable).
  • Patient interaction involving sitting, walking, and computer usage.
  • Exposure Category: Category III (tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues; Category I tasks are not a condition of employment).
