Patient Access Rep I
Part-time overnight role at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (11:00 PM – 7:30 AM). Includes shift differential, 1 rotating weekend per month, and 2 holidays per year.

Role Purpose
The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service and compassion. This role facilitates all components of a patient’s entrance into any BJC facility, requiring high emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to make personal connections. The position impacts reimbursement levels and denial prevention by accurately collecting demographics, insurance information, verifying benefits, and collecting point-of-service payments. Selecting the correct patient from the Master Person Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety. The role demands a friendly demeanor, exceptional attention to detail, and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and regulatory agencies.
Responsibilities
- Utilize critical thinking to problem-solve various situations, anticipate patient needs, and respond accordingly.
- Communicate professionally and positively with patients, families, and coworkers in-person, over the phone, or via computer to ensure a positive patient experience, maximize reimbursements, and minimize denials.
- Ensure the integrity of patients' clinical, financial, and billing records by correctly selecting the precise Master Patient Index (MPI).
- Perform hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems, ensuring proper patient identification, insurance verification, and document scanning/retrieval.
- Validate that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and that the correct test is ordered.
- Provide patients with preparation instructions for scheduled procedures, educate them on financial responsibilities, and collect applicable payments.
- Understand, articulate, and enforce compliance with Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO Requirements.
- Ensure each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgment.

Minimum Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Experience: No prior experience required

- Education: Associate’s Degree
- Licenses & Certifications: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA)
