Patient Access Rep - Full Time - Days

Provides patient-focused customer service. Performs outpatient and inpatient registration and insurance verification functions; collects patient financial liability payments and ensures that patients meet financial requirements including Medicare medical necessity, payer pre-certifications, and referrals. Provides general information to hospital users, patients, families, and physician offices.

Responsibilities

  • Validate, obtain, and enter demographic, clinical, financial, and insurance information into the patient accounting system by interviewing the patient, family member, and/or guarantor.
  • Perform registration activities in various settings/locations for multiple patient types (Inpatients, Outpatients, Ambulatory Surgery, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Outpatients, Labor & Delivery, Newborn, Lab Specimens, etc.).
  • Prepare patient estimates and inform patient/guarantor of their liabilities; collect appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits, and outstanding balances at the point of check-in.
  • Document payments/actions in the patient accounting system and provide the patient with a payment receipt.
  • Obtain signed physician orders for all tests and procedures from physicians/offices.
  • Prepare identification bracelets and patient ID labels.
  • Obtain/scan patient/guarantor signatures on required forms (ID cards, insurance cards, consent to treatment, assignment of benefits, release of information, waivers, etc.).
  • May audit and record the patient's valuables, securing appropriate authorizations if needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • HFMA CRCR or NAHAM CHAA certification required within one (1) year of hire.
  • Minimum one (1) year of customer service experience.
  • Patient Access experience preferred.

Skills

  • Must be able to read, write, and/or speak English.
  • Computer/PC experience/skills required.
  • Typing (40 words per minute) or data entry (50-60 keystrokes per minute) preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology desired.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), interpersonal skills, and the ability to interpret customer requirements and take action to satisfy customer needs.
  • Accuracy, attentiveness to detail, and time management skills required.
  • Annual assessment of competency completed every year.

Schedule

  • 9-hour shift (6:30 AM – 4:00 PM, 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM, or 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM, rotates weekly).
  • 4 days a week, 72 hours per pay period.
  • Rotating Saturdays (7:30 AM – 11:00 AM).
