Patient Access Associate - Part Time
About the Role
Under general supervision, the ED and Inpatient Patient Access Associate is responsible for computerized patient registration within the Emergency Room and Admission Areas. This role ensures the integrity of the medical record by validating all patient data, including demographic and insurance information, to support accurate and timely reimbursement and revenue collections. The position focuses on registration functions, patient safety, compliance, comfort care, and customer service in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment.
Schedule
Part-time: every other weekend overnight (Friday/Saturday, 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM).
Responsibilities
- Greet patients with a positive and professional attitude and initiate the registration process.
- Select the correct patient by properly entering required fields within the ADT system to ensure patient safety and create visits appropriately.
- Perform follow-up on assigned third-party accounts for all ED and inpatient admissions, including verifying eligibility, obtaining benefits, and ensuring authorization/referral requirements (e.g., drug screenings, global international patients, referrals for hospital-contracted facilities).
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment, meeting departmental needs effectively as an individual and team member.
- Support customer service and performance improvement goals of the department.
- Determine and document out-of-pocket responsibility for services based on insurance contracts or Penn Medicine Princeton Health Fee Schedules. Collect Time of Service (TOS) and Point of Service (POS) payments according to policy. Refer patients to Financial Counselors or Medicaid Screeners as needed.
- Participate in educational sessions, seminars, annual mandatories, staff meetings, and hospital sessions to enhance patient care activities and work behaviors.
- Utilize Workstation on Wheels (WOW) or handheld devices for bedside registration.
- Commit to your assigned shift, arriving on time and ready to work. Facilitate backup coverage for the ED if unable to work.
- Perform follow-up on assigned third-party accounts for ED outpatients or hospital admissions (IP and OBS), including verifying eligibility, benefits, pre-certification, and authorization/referral requirements.
- Use web-based applications and internet resources to follow up on outstanding items, contacting insurance companies and patients as needed to facilitate coverage and payment.
- Process correspondence from insurance companies, case management, and other areas within 24 hours of receipt.
- Greet patients with a positive and professional attitude and initiate registration or check-in processes as needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (required).
- Two years of medical experience.
- Previous hospital or physician office registration experience preferred.
Pay
Salary Range: $17.75 - $28.33/hour. Successful candidates are provided a specific rate based on experience and education.
