Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Pathology Manager or Technologists—who are available to handle or advise on unusual situations—and in accordance with specific and detailed instructions or procedures, conducts clinical laboratory tests.Responsibilities
- Prepares and determines suitability of solutions and reagents, following standard laboratory formulas
- Sets up and reads routine blood and urine cultures to detect pathogenic bacteria and determine organism susceptibility to various antibiotics
- Performs routine clinical and microscopic tests on urine, stool, and other specimens
- Sets up instruments by re-supplying reagents, calibrates equipment, and runs specimens on a variety of automated systems
- Draws patient blood samples following established procedures and transports specimens to the laboratory for testing
- Notes and logs specimens received and maintains detailed records of all tests performed
- Reports test results to authorized individuals
- Reviews test results to ensure accuracy and conformance with established quality control parameters
- Prepares specimens for testing procedures, including cutting, sectioning, staining, and smearing
- Labels and logs all specimens processed
- Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workbenches
- Performs other related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Basic Knowledge: Requires knowledge generally obtained through an Associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, or a related area, or equivalent practical laboratory experience
- Experience: Six to twelve months of job-related experience required
