About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) in Community Living advances the organization’s mission by delivering compassionate, person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a residential setting. This position empowers individuals to achieve their highest level of independence by promoting choice, dignity, and inclusion in all aspects of daily life. The DSP fosters skill development, community integration, and meaningful engagement while ensuring a safe, supportive, and respectful home environment. In some homes, the DSP may provide additional behavioral or medical support, assisting individuals with specific needs related to health care, mobility, or behavioral challenges.

Responsibilities

• Promote meaningful community integration for individuals in residential settings by encouraging participation in community life, building relationships, accessing local resources, and engaging in community-based programs and events aligned with their interests and Individual Support Plan (ISP).
• Assist in developing essential life skills through goal-oriented activities that promote independence, social interaction, and personal growth.
• Foster inclusion by creating opportunities for individuals to make choices, explore new environments, and contribute to their communities in a purposeful way.
• Provide personalized physical and emotional support in a safe, clean, and person-centered home environment, including housekeeping tasks such as meal preparation, laundry, bed-making, and maintaining household equipment.
• Assist individuals with mobility and transfer needs using appropriate assistive technology and safety protocols to promote comfort, independence, and dignity.
• Support individuals in using adaptive devices and participating in daily routines to enhance autonomy and quality of life.
• Administer prescribed medications following physician orders and complete thorough documentation, including medication administration records, daily logs, and incident reports.
• Provide personal care, including bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, and mobility assistance, while supporting individuals' dignity and well-being.
• Prepare and serve meals according to dietary needs and provide support at medical appointments, including scheduling, transportation, attending visits, and assisting with communication and follow-up care.
• Ensure regulatory compliance by accurately completing all required documentation (medical, behavioral, and daily logs) within established timeframes and following agency and state guidelines.
• Maintain professionalism and accountability through consistent attendance, participation in mandatory training and team meetings, and adherence to agency policies and safety protocols.
• Strengthen a positive work culture through effective, courteous, and professional communication, demonstrating kindness, patience, respect, and advocacy in all aspects of employment.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (preferred).
• Valid driver’s license, reliable and insured vehicle.
• Ability to satisfactorily complete mandatory (paid) training courses, including CPR/First Aid, Medication Administration (Med Aide), and Universal Precautions.
• Ability to perform essential duties, with reasonable accommodations provided for individuals with disabilities.

Physical Requirements

• Ability and strength to position, lift, and transfer individuals weighing over 50 lbs., including safely assisting an adult to the ground to perform CPR.
• Continuous ability to kneel on hard surfaces for extended periods as required for CPR.
• Continuous ability to push and pull 100-125 lbs. of pressure consistently over extended periods as required for CPR (per American Heart Association guidelines).
• Ability to lift, carry, squat, bend, move, push, pull, sit, or stand repetitively and for long intermittent periods.
• Ability to type on a keyboard and view a computer or electronic screen for extended periods.
• Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods.

Pay

Starting wage: $18.25 per hour (higher depending on experience). Hours and rate of pay are subject to change relative to program and business needs.

Schedule

Shifts are based on the needs of the individuals being served. Available status includes:

• PTI: 0-19 hours per week
• PTII: 20-29 hours per week
• PTIII: 30-34 hours per week
• FT: 35-40 hours per week
