Part-Time Special Education Paraeducator (Resource)
About the Role
Special education paraeducators work under the overall supervision of their building principal with direct supervision provided by special education teachers. They are employed to implement special education or related services for a class and/or to provide direct assistance to students. Duties vary depending upon the age of students served as well as the nature and severity of the student's disabilities.
Responsibilities
Resource Room Paraeducator
- Assist in working on IEP goals and/or daily assignments in small groups in and outside of the classroom setting.
- Provide documentation and objective information about student performance to the supervising teacher.
- Serve as a direct liaison between regular education and resource teachers and/or other special education teachers involved in a student's case.
- Maintain a flexible balance between high standards of expectations and student support.
- Keep resource teachers updated on assignments, notes, study guides, and changes in classroom expectations from assigned classes on a daily basis.
- Assist with classroom setup and organization.
- Carry out accommodations and modifications as set by the IEP Team in the classroom setting.
Additional Duties
- Assist guidance, pupil services staff, or building administration as needed.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
Equipment and Travel
- Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers.
- Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
- Ability to understand, apply, and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees, and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications include:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of college-level coursework or passing of examination as required.
- Prior experience working with children is desirable.
