Part-Time Seasonal Delivery Driver - Class A License & Tractor Trailer Experience Required - $32/Hour (Lake Mary, FL)
Scholastic drivers are scheduled to work during school-year peaks and off when schools are closed, ensuring home time every weekend and the majority of weeknights. In certain markets, drivers may have one to two overnight routes per week during peak periods, with provided hotel accommodations and a $50 meal allowance.
About the role
Each year, Scholastic Book Fairs partners with schools across the country to host over 100,000 book-sale events. As a Part-time Seasonal CDL A Delivery Driver, you’ll be part of the team ensuring that more than 35 million students and their families have access to thousands of affordable and educational products, fostering a lifelong love of reading.
Responsibilities
- Work with supervisor to deliver and pick-up fairs in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
- Inspect and prepare fifth wheel before coupling.
- Operate Semi Tractor with either single or tandem axle, manual or automatic transmission, combined with a 48’ or 53’ trailer for line hauling fairs from branch facility to hub location.
- Deliver fairs using a Semi Tractor with pup trailer.
- Couple and uncouple trailers safely and in a timely manner; connect/disconnect air and brake lines, and properly operate landing gear.
- Maintain customer service standards by working closely with supervisor.
- Load and unload trucks with or without mechanical assistance.
- Communicate routing problems (e.g., road construction, address changes) to supervisor for updates to the routing team.
- Deliver and pick-up product from schools in a courteous and professional manner.
- Secure and transport products to ensure a “Damage Free” fair for customers.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle; notify supervisor of any defects or problems.
- Maintain accurate and legible records, including DOT logs, trip sheets, fuel tickets, road expenses, and other required paperwork.
- Adhere to all Company, local, state, and federal rules/regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA).
- Report accidents, delivery/pick-up issues, or mechanical failures to the Regional/Branch office immediately.
- Assist with warehouse tasks as directed by supervisor.
- Complete overnight routes as necessary.
- Maintain professional appearance, including well-groomed hair, clean uniform, and hygienic habits.
- Attend monthly driver meetings and complete all continuous training materials as required.
- Complete annual Certificate of Violation Process accurately and honestly.
- Use proper techniques for lifting, packing, and handling heavy objects, climbing ladders, and pushing/pulling display cases.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Maintain truck per company standards.
- Adhere to regular attendance schedule and drug/alcohol-free policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
- Verifiable commercial driving experience of at least one (1) year, with at least 40,000 miles of verifiable commercial CDL “A” tractor-trailer driving and delivery experience.
- Minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Valid CDL A license with air brake endorsement, validated through recertification with an approved Driving School.
- Must pass a drug screen, alcohol screen, Motor Vehicle Record review, criminal background review, and DOT physical examination.
- Ability to drive vehicles weighing over 26,001 GVW and trailers over 10,000 lbs., with a combined GVW up to 80,000 lbs.
- Ability to lift/carry up to 70 lbs. and push, pull, lift, and handle metal/plastic cases weighing over 350 lbs. on a regular basis.
