About the role

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative and dynamic Part-Time Recreation Specialist to join the team at David B. Waymer Recreation Center. This role involves planning, organizing, and executing programs and services for diverse communities, including youth and senior adults. Program areas may include athletics, social events, and summer/day camps. The position also includes front desk operations and maintaining an inviting facility environment.

The selected candidate will help form strong community partnerships and assess needs for increased program offerings. This position works approximately 29 hours per week, including mornings, daytime, evenings, and rotating weekends based on facility needs. Candidates may also be considered for similar roles at other Park and Recreation locations if they meet minimum qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
• Provide customer service and handle funds through telephone, email, website, social media, and in-person interactions for information, program registration, center use, and rentals.
• Ensure safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
• Enforce rules and regulations.
• Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
• Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
• Referee at various sports activities; serve as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or linesperson at games.
• Supervise children in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
• Handle inquiries and complaints from the public.
• Drive a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to different locations as needed.
• Assist with department events and field trips.
• Serve as manager on duty if the Recreation Facility Manager is unavailable.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, or one of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree with 6 months of prior work experience as a temporary or part-time employee with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree with two years of related experience.
  • Four years of similar related experience.
• Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
• Ability to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification within one year of hire.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other computer applications.

• Experience planning and facilitating programs for senior adults.
• Strong knowledge of athletics operations and administration.
