About the role

This position involves performing a variety of clerical duties in an office setting, supporting the operations of the police department.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls for the police department.
  • Reviews department records for pertinent information.
  • Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to police personnel, City department staff, other law enforcement personnel, and the general public.
  • Typing, formatting, editing, proofreading, filing, gathering, and compiling correspondence, reports, forms, and other documents related to the functions of the police department.
  • Maintaining radio contact with units in the field.
  • Keeps computer logs of all department activities.
  • Processes, completes, and maintains department records and forms.
  • Processes currency and issues receipts.
  • May process permits and licenses.
  • May assist in the compilation of figures and statistics.
  • Performs a variety of clerical work involving use of independent judgment, accuracy, and speed.
  • Remember and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Furnish routine information to the public tactfully and courteously.
  • Perform duties without direct supervision.

Requirements

  • Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.
  • One-year office experience in a clerical position requiring public contact.

Qualifications

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Knowledge of basic computer terminal operation methods and office software.
  • Record-keeping methods.
  • Modern office methods, equipment, and procedures.
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Filing systems and procedures.

Skills

  • Ability to operate radio transmitting communication equipment.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Deal with the general public in a positive and professional manner.
