Location: Lynn/Danvers, MA. Part-time, grant funded, non-benefited position.

About the role

Employment begins after successful completion of the required Peer Interpreting Training. 6 academic credits are awarded, which may fulfill Open, Humanities, Liberal Arts, and/or Modern Language Elective credits towards your program through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). After each successful semester, 3 credits will be awarded for a total of 6 credits.

Pay

$17.30/hr.

Schedule

The work schedule is divided into two sections:

  • Pre-Employment Required Training Schedule: The course format includes four video conference sessions via Zoom and four in-person sessions on campus.
    • Monday, July 27, 2026 - Thursday, July 30, 2026 (Zoom 9AM - 12:30PM)
    • Monday, August 3, 2026 - Thursday, August 6, 2026 (Lynn Campus 9AM - 1PM)
    Total hours: 30 hours
  • Post-Training Peer Interpreting Schedule: Up to 10 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret between English and Spanish or between English and Haitian Creole during College events, e.g., Registration Events, Information Sessions, Open Houses, Orientations, Commencements, Community Events, College Departments.
  • Assist Spanish- and/or Haitian Creole-speaking students and their families with the school enrollment process as needed.
  • Serve as liaison between NSCC and Spanish- and/or Haitian Creole-speaking groups and organizations in the community.
  • Through interpreting services, assist school staff in understanding and appreciating the Hispanic and Haitian cultures.
  • Select Peer Interpreters may be assigned translation assignments as needed in addition to interpreting. These Peer Interpreters will complete written translations of short to medium-length texts and flyers to ensure accuracy.
  • Perform other related work as required.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of 100% of the required Peer Interpreter Training and related assignments.
  • Commitment to up to 10 hours per week as a Peer Interpreter.
  • Demonstrate linguistic proficiency in interpreting between languages (Spanish/English and/or Haitian Creole/Spanish/English).
  • Apply cultural competency to navigate diverse contexts respectfully.
  • Employ various interpreting techniques effectively in real-world scenarios.
  • Facilitate clear and meaningful communication between parties.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality.
  • If a current English Language learner, successful completion of LNG 104 or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of intermediate Spanish CLEP test and/or Haitian Creole BYU/NYU test or in-person interview with the program coordinator or Director.
  • For Translation Track: strong written ability in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole and English.
  • Ability to participate in Interpreting Training schedule: 9AM - 1PM Monday - Thursdays July 27, 2026 - August 6, 2026.
  • Ability to participate in program Capstone Events:
    • Fall Open House (October)
    • Spring Open House (March)
    • 2027 Commencement (Spring 2027 graduates are ineligible to participate)
  • Maintain successful academic progress during participation in the Peer Interpreting program. Degree audit will be conducted during Training to ensure eligibility.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check as a condition of employment.
