Interpreter Specialist - Part - Time

Part-time (.5) position at an academic medical center with a rich history of providing life-saving treatment in Southern Nevada. About the Role

Performs professional-level interpretation for assigned departments, including simultaneous, consecutive modes of interpretation, and sight translations. May provide general, routine interpretation in clinical and/or ancillary areas.

Responsibilities

• Accurately and completely transmit information between patients and providers.
• Use simultaneous and consecutive modes of interpretation and sight translation, transitioning between modes as needed.
• Establish the interpreter's role and provide clear, well-paced communication.
• Adjust to situational demands while maintaining the linguistic register and style of the speaker.
• Manage spatial configuration to maximize communication.
• Remain calm in high-stress, emergent, or emotionally difficult situations.
• Verify and ensure understanding of messages to be transmitted.
• Identify and correct own mistakes.
• Translate non-clinical hospital documents accurately.
• Use initiative and independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
• Communicate with diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel.
• Use computers, related software applications, and equipment safely and effectively.

Requirements

• Graduation or certification from an accredited school of interpretation or training program.
• One year of experience as an interpreter in a medical setting (professional level experience defined as employment in an FLSA exempt/salaried status position).
• National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (CMI) or The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) certification (must obtain within six months of hire).
• 1+ years of experience as a Spanish Interpreter.
• 1+ year of experience in a hospital setting.
• Completion of the Bridging The Gap (BTG) Professional Medical Interpreter Training.

Skills

• Knowledge of interpretation modes (consecutive, simultaneous, first or third person, sight translation).
• Familiarity with medical, anatomical, and physiological terminology in both English and the target language.
• Understanding of linguistic registers and styles within the designated language groups.
• Adherence to interpreter code of ethics and cultural etiquette.
• Knowledge of Title VI federal law as it relates to LEP patients and non-discrimination statutes.
• Customer service principles and practices.
• Effective use of mnemonic devices for information retention.
• Problem-solving and report-writing skills.
• Ability to train others effectively.
• Coordination of staff schedules and monitoring work quality.
• Proficiency in using computers and related software applications.
