PART TIME PARKS AND TRAIL RANGER
About the role
The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting for a Part‑Time Parks and Trail Ranger. The department offers over 72 miles of trail and 44 parks, providing opportunities for hiking, biking, running, and equestrian use. The Park Ranger Division aims to inspire sustainability, conservation, and healthy lifestyles by providing public information, interpreting and enforcing park rules, assisting with events and programs, and ensuring patron safety.
Responsibilities
- Act as a source of public information about City parks and trail network.
- Interpret and enforce park rules and regulations for visitors.
- Assist with various events and programs.
- Ensure safety for park patrons.
- Perform parking enforcement for non‑moving violations at City Parks and City Facilities as needed.
- Occasionally direct helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
Requirements / Qualifications
This is an entry‑level position in the Park and Trail Ranger series. Incumbents receive detailed instructions on methods, procedures, and desired results with little deviation. Advancement to Lead Park and Trail Ranger is based on demonstrated proficiency and supervisory discretion. Part‑time roles are limited to an average of 20 hours per week and no more than 999 hours per fiscal year.
Schedule
The position requires morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours. Available shifts include evening weekday and weekend schedules.
