About the role
AIP is looking for a Laundry Worker to work in Brownsville, TX. The Laundry Worker operates under the supervision of the Laundry Lead, acting independently or assisting in all duties necessary to keep the facility laundry fully operational. The role ensures laundry operations comply with Performance Based National Detention Standards, American Correctional Association standards, and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Sizes, marks, alters, and repairs clothing.
- Repairs or replaces defective garment parts such as elastic waistbands, pockets, pocket flaps, and coat linings.
- Shortens or lengthens sleeves or legs; expands or narrows waist and chest; raises or lowers collars; and sets sleeves to armholes.
- Resews garments using needle and thread or sewing machine.
- Maintains adequate stock of clothing, towels, undergarments, and bedding supplies.
- Monitors safety procedures of equipment and working area.
- Operates one or more industrial washing machines to wash linens, garments, towels, and other articles.
- Operates valves, switches, and levers to start and stop washing machines.
- Controls the amount and temperature of water for soaping and rinsing each batch.
- Loads and unloads washers and drying machines.
- Operates switches and levers to start and stop drying machines.
- Controls the time and temperature of each drying machine according to cloth material.
- Folds and sorts clean clothing, linens, and other articles according to requirements.
- Ensures proper distribution in accordance with the facility laundry exchange schedule.
- Completes work in a priority established by the Laundry Lead or facility need, maintaining a high degree of professionalism, quality, and craftsmanship.
- Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work area by conducting daily inspections of work equipment and the work area.
- Immediately reports mechanical failures, unsafe work conditions, accidents, and/or injuries to the Laundry Lead or shift supervisor on duty.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Laundry Lead or PMO.
Requirements
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID prior to start date.
- Experience preferred in large-scale laundry/tailor operations.
- Must be able to operate industrial laundry washing machines, dryers, and sewing machines.
- Must be able to follow Standard Codes of Conduct pertaining to interaction with staff and detainees.
- Work areas include laundry rooms and detention areas, which may be hot and humid. Exposure to hot equipment, wet floors, industrial chemicals, solvents, and mechanically active equipment is possible.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must pass an extensive background investigation and drug testing. Random drug testing will be performed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
- Ability to interpret standards and policies.
- Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs such as Word and Excel.
- Organizational skills commensurate with the position.
Physical Capabilities
- Must pass a pre-employment physical and maintain physical fitness standards.
- Ability to walk through all areas of the facility, including in varied and sometimes extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, and bend for extended periods.
- Ability to respond quickly during emergency situations, including jogging and fast walking to incidents.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to push a laundry cart loaded with clothing, linens, towels, undergarments, and other articles.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, reach, and climb stairs, ladders, and slopes periodically.
- Must strictly maintain physical fitness standards throughout employment.
- Must be capable of performing CPR and rendering first aid assistance when needed.
