Part-Time Instructor to teach MUE 310/610 Field Experience in Music Education, a one-credit-hour course during the Spring semester 2027.

About the Role

Orientation to school settings: organization, services, guidance, goals, and evaluation. Observations and supervised teaching experiences in music at elementary and secondary levels. Experiences are coordinated with music education courses in sophomore/junior years and the graduate teacher preparation program. Additional work is required of graduate students.

Responsibilities

• Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
• Preparation of lectures, projects, or other student assignments.
• Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
• Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meeting all designated class periods. If unable to meet due to illness or emergency, exercising best effort to reschedule the class or obtain a substitute, and notifying the department chair of the absence and plan to cover the class.
• Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
• Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.

Requirements

• Comprehensive understanding of music teaching and learning in public schools, particularly elementary and secondary levels.
• Record of outstanding public-school teaching and knowledge of music instruction in general, choral, and instrumental settings, as well as inclusion of students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
• Commitment to equity for all students and teaching approaches tailored to include all students in the learning process.
• Excellent connections and working relationships with local public-school teachers.
• Master’s degree in music education with New York State Music K-12 teaching certification required; doctorate degree in music education is desirable (ABD candidates will also be considered).
• Understanding of various teaching methodologies in music, demands of public-school ensemble scheduling, task analysis, and ability to mentor prospective music educators.
• Experience in leading engaging and dynamic classrooms, student learning achievement in public-school settings, classroom management and discipline, assessment, lesson planning, and scope and sequence.
• Prior college teaching experience strongly preferred.
• Strong attention to detail, knowledge of course content, demonstrated professional experience and/or prior public-school teaching experience.
• Ability to relate well in a classroom and one-on-one environment with college-level students.
• Preference given to applicants who could potentially fulfill multiple positions within the Setnor School of Music.
