About the role

The AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE Program at Syracuse University seeks to hire a Part-Time Instructor for face-to-face ASL instruction for the Spring 2024 semester. The Part-Time Instructor should be able to teach one section of ASL 101 (level 1) and potentially one section of ASL 102 (level 2) or ASL 201 (level 3).

Responsibilities

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Participating in student recitals or showings.
  • Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes, if applicable.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Providing an updated CV annually or upon request of the department or school.
  • Participating in departmental meetings or workshops.
  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.

Qualifications

  • MA/MS degree in ASL teaching, Deaf Studies, or related field.
  • Native or near native fluency in ASL.
  • At least three years of prior experience teaching ASL at the college/university level.
  • Ability to teach in hybrid or in-person between Monday-Friday, on the Syracuse Main Campus.
  • Ability to work with a team to coordinate classes within the ASL program.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • National Certification in ASL teaching or equivalent.
  • Experience using the Signing Naturally curriculum or similar ASL curriculum.
  • Experience using Blackboard or other online platform for course organization.
