About the role
The AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE Program at Syracuse University seeks to hire a Part-Time Instructor for face-to-face ASL instruction for the Spring 2024 semester. The Part-Time Instructor should be able to teach one section of ASL 101 (level 1) and potentially one section of ASL 102 (level 2) or ASL 201 (level 3).
Responsibilities
- Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
- Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
- Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
- Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
- Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
- Participating in student recitals or showings.
- Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes, if applicable.
- Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
- Providing an updated CV annually or upon request of the department or school.
- Participating in departmental meetings or workshops.
- Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
Qualifications
- MA/MS degree in ASL teaching, Deaf Studies, or related field.
- Native or near native fluency in ASL.
- At least three years of prior experience teaching ASL at the college/university level.
- Ability to teach in hybrid or in-person between Monday-Friday, on the Syracuse Main Campus.
- Ability to work with a team to coordinate classes within the ASL program.
Job Specific Qualifications
- National Certification in ASL teaching or equivalent.
- Experience using the Signing Naturally curriculum or similar ASL curriculum.
- Experience using Blackboard or other online platform for course organization.
