Part-Time Drama/Theater Arts Instructor (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Initial placement can range as follows:

• Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB): $89.20 up to $130.94 per hour
• Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC): $103.85 up to $151.07 per hour

Schedule

Semester assignments as needed. Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the contract.

Responsibilities

• Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions
• Teach college transfer courses in the dramatic arts, such as acting, literature, directing, and theater production
• Direct plays for public performances
• Participate in curriculum development in the Drama Department
• Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with District, College, and division policies in the performance of duties
• Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings

Requirements

• Master's or higher or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance
• OR Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance AND Master's or higher in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities
• OR the equivalent (see below)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

• Degree Equivalence: Possess a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. Equivalence is established through analysis of transcripts and coursework.
• Academic Background Equivalence: For disciplines where a Master's degree is not generally expected or available, complete at least 24 semester units (or equivalent) of coursework in the academic field, including:
  • A broad cultural education (usually met by general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree)
  • A detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor (usually met by coursework required for the degree major)
• Professional Achievement Equivalence: Demonstrate equivalence to general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. Knowledge

• Current theories and methods in teaching acting, dramatic theory, literature, and theater production
• Relevant, culturally diverse dramatic literature and productions
• Lighting design or construction, including scenic and costume

Skills and Abilities

• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Successful experience teaching college-level theater courses
• Recent successful experience directing at the college, semi-professional, or professional level
• Ability to organize and explain material in ways appropriate to students with different abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences
• Work collaboratively with other College departments and within the external community
• Develop and use multiple teaching methods (e.g., computer-assisted instruction, multimedia demonstrations, lecture/lab, self-paced formats, and online instruction) to address diverse student needs and learning styles
• Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college
