About the role
This is a sworn Part-time Law Enforcement position appointed by the Sheriff of the City of Richmond. Part-time Deputies normally work within Court Services and are responsible for the security and welfare of all Judges, clerks, litigants, the general public and other such persons while in the court buildings which includes: John Marshall District Court, Marsh-Manchester General District Court and the Oliver Hill Court-Juvenile Court. The Part-time Deputy Sheriff will work no more than twenty-nine (29) hours weekly. There are no benefits associated with this position.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the security and safety of the assigned court building
- Espouses the Judges on and off the bench
- Moves inmates to and from the courtroom as requested by the court
- Opens each session of court with the appropriate “Proclamation”
- Responsible for the security of all inmates, detainees and arrestees while in the custody of the Sheriff at the court building
- Responsible for the transfer of all court dispositions, release papers and detention orders to the proper authorities
- Conducts pre-trial courtroom inspections and security checks
- Interviews Commonwealth’s Attorneys, public defenders and personal attorneys to determine needs concerning high profile or potentially risky trials
- Directs litigants and attorneys at trial and supervises the gallery of public observing trials
- Maintains constant vigil for threats, potential threats and situations that could disrupt the efficient and safe operation of the court
- Performs functions as the Judge may desire
- Aids in other court service functions as deemed necessary by the Division Commander
- Carry out any or all other duties as directed by the Sheriff or his or her designee
Requirements

- Exercise rational judgment
- Qualify with firearms and other defensive weapons
- Maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that will enable you to handle involvement with dangerous and potentially dangerous people, animals and equipment
- Communicate effectively with other Court Deputies or deputies in the Richmond City Justice Center via two-way radio using proper terminology and ten-codes as prescribed by the Standard Operating Procedures
- Must possess a high school diploma and have a minimum of twenty (20) years of experience as a Deputy Sheriff or Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- The preferred candidate will have court services experience and be knowledgeable and experienced in court proceedings and operations
- Candidate must have current DCJS certification. If retired, the candidate must be hired within twenty-four (24) months of the retirement date
- Will possess basic computer skills and be familiar with the use of Microsoft Office software
- Will utilize the weapon they purchased after retiring, that was authorized for use by the agency they were employed with
- Requires medium to heavy work that involves exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move or carry objects
- Duties involve, but are not limited to, running, walking, climbing stairs, sitting or standing for long periods, crouching/stooping, bending/squatting, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, grasping and raising objects
- Must have manual dexterity, sense of touch and hand strength to use a firearm or physically subdue a person and apply or remove handcuffs
- Must have normal hearing and normal or correctable vision
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19
