Part-Time Business Support Assistant (Front Desk Reception)

About the role

The scenic seaside community of Laguna Beach seeks a competent, team-oriented professional for the position of Associate Engineer. In addition to salary, 5% will be paid for required Civil Engineer registration. This is a new position and is set to be filled March 1, 2009. The selection process will include an oral interview and other selection techniques designed to predict successful performance. The appointing authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.

Responsibilities

• Works independently in managing design consultants and construction contractors and is responsible for overseeing the design and construction of a variety of capital improvement projects, including parks, streets, sewer system, drainage, and other public facilities improvements.
• All design work is performed through the use of consultant services. The Associate Engineer is charged with responsibility for overseeing the work of these consultants.
• Conducts oral presentations on projects to the Design Review Board, interacts with the community regarding capital improvement projects, special projects, and oversees/inspects the work of others, including department staff.
• Applies for grant funding and ensures compliance with funding requirements.

Requirements

• Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or construction management.
• Experience: Four years (full time or cumulative part-time) of civil engineering experience. This professional work experience must include at least 3 years working on the design or administration of public works projects. Municipal agency related engineering experience and experience with AutoCAD and ArcView is highly desired.
• Licenses/Certificates: Current registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California is required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge: The use of a personal computer, including Excel and MS Word; some skills in AutoCad, GIS or other engineering applications; supervision of design consultants, and in construction contract administration.
• Ability: Effectively handle a demanding workload of multiple priorities; work effectively and cooperatively with those contacted in the performance of duties, including the general public; work beyond the normal schedule when necessary to accomplish tasks in an exemplary manner; communicate using exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
