About the role

The Bus Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and orderly conduct of students while they are being transported to and from school and school-related activities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students on the school bus to promote safe and appropriate behavior.
  • Aid students during boarding and exiting procedures, ensuring student safety at all times.
  • Maintain order and enforce school and transportation rules while on the bus.
  • Monitor student conduct and address minor behavioral concerns in accordance with school policies and procedures.
  • Report disciplinary issues, safety concerns, accidents, injuries, or incidents to the bus driver and appropriate school personnel.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding bus pick up and drop off, at times making phone calls.
  • Wait with students until the final student is released to their guardian.
  • Assist younger students and students with special needs as required.
  • Ensure students remain seated and follow safety procedures during transportation.
  • Support emergency evacuation procedures and participate in required safety drills.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, bus drivers, and school staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Attend required training, meetings, and professional development sessions as assigned.
  • Aid in creating a welcoming and positive environment for all students.
  • Resolve routine communication problems or incident reports with families, students, and school officials.
  • Demonstrate team work with bus driver daily.
  • Support with arrival and dismissal.

Qualifications

  • Possess a high school diploma (or equivalent).
  • One of the following: Completion of at least two years of college (48 semester units or 90 quarter units), or attainment of an AA (or higher) degree.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Experience working with children in a school, childcare, recreational, or youth-serving environment preferred.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and manage student behavior.
  • Professional, warm, and collaborative with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with transportation and school staff.
