Part-Time ALS/Firefighter

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergency calls and provides emergency medical services including basic and advanced life support.
• Participates in continuing training and instruction programs via individual study of technical materials and attending scheduled drills and classes.
• Drives and/or operates various medical apparatus; ensures that emergency vehicles are completely stocked and maintained in a safe and efficient operational condition.
• Performs station duties such as daily unit checks, equipment maintenance, and cleaning of station and grounds.
• Performs non-emergency public services such as lift assists, stand-by for events, river duties on fire boat, etc., as needed.
• Provides public safety education services to the community (makes presentations, gives station tours, speaks to outside groups and schools).
• Supports emergency management activities and services as needed.
• Conducts emergency pre-planning, entry, exit procedures, and hazard/life safety awareness.

Requirements

• Minimum Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Licenses And/or Certifications: Virginia or National Registry EMT Intermediate or Paramedic certification upon hire, Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with zero or plus points.
• Must meet and maintain training and education requirements for position.

Qualifications

• Knowledge: Knowledge of advanced life support equipment, practices, and protocols; Knowledge of the process of identifying hazardous materials, as well as their risks and protective actions.

• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse patients, family members, caretakers, physicians, etc.;

Supplemental Information

• Work Environment: Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or extreme heat, heights, odors, noise, dust, fumes, and hazardous materials.
• Shift work including weekends, holidays, nights, and working beyond normal work schedule.
• Must wear uniform including safety equipment.

Essential Physical Activities

• Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, and depth perception.
• Typical weight handled: up to 125 lbs. individually, up to 250 lbs. with assistance (lift, carry, and balance).
