General Function
Under general supervision, performs fire suppression/fire prevention duties; assesses, treats acutely ill and injured citizens; performs rescue procedures, operates emergency fire apparatus and emergency medical equipment; performs fire inspections and prevention programs; participates in Fire/EMS training, station and equipment maintenance; and performs related work as required.
Essential Functions
- Performs and may lead fire suppression duties; deploys fire hose for suppression and water supply; enters fired building, locating, and extinguishing fire; searches for and rescues fire victims.
- Performs and leads salvage operations; raises and places ladder to preserve property; overhauls fire scene to prevent rekindle.
- May assist in determining origin and cause of fire; preserves fire scene for investigation.
- Operates and maintains fire apparatus including pumpers, aerial ladders and ambulances.
- Performs fire prevention inspections, pre-fire plans on commercial/public facilities; fire prevention educational programs; participates in on-going continuing education programs.
- Performs emergency medical duties; evaluates sick and injured persons; performs basic, and if certified, advanced pre-hospital care; operates technical medical monitoring equipment; stabilizes and lifts patients; calculates drug dosages; completes evaluation and treatment forms.

- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens or employees of organization.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to assess, plan, organize, and execute essential job functions without a need for constant supervision; ability to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of rules and regulations of the department and other authorities; ability to cooperate with fellow employees and general public, ability to communicate and interpret information of highly technical medical nature to patients and health professionals; ability to understand written and oral instructions; ability to exhibit emotional stability and courage in performing potentially dangerous duties under stress; must be of good moral character with ability to distinguish and disseminate sensitive information, must be free of any communicable disease while in a contagious stage; must become knowledgeable of geography of the City of Forest Park, locations and status of water supply system, and fire suppression systems.
- Performs equipment inspection, preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment, minor repairs to equipment, vehicles and facilities.
- May be required to assist in or conduct public education programs in Fire or EMS related subjects, completes records and reports.
- In addition to these duties, the Firefighter/Paramedic is required to participate in company-level fire safety inspections.
- May be assigned responsibility for a project or Area of Responsibility (AOR). In this event, the Firefighter/Paramedic will be required to plan and implement said project.
Minimum Required Experience And Training
- Highschool graduate/GED, valid driver's license, good driving record and able to be insured by the City's insurance carrier, State of Ohio Certification as a Firefighter II and Paramedic.
- Applicants must be able to pass a background check, polygraph, and physical examination requirements.
- Part-time Fire employees are eligible to receive one week of paid vacation after working at least 1080 hours in the prior year.
