Schedule
- Monday–Thursday: 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
- First Saturday of each month: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Pay
$36.55 per hour (non-benefited, MCCC unit position)
About the role
The Part-Time Academic Counselor provides equitable, developmental, and appreciative advising to new, returning, and transfer students to integrate their academic, personal, career, and educational goals. This role is part of the Student Support and Advising Center services offered on each campus and requires in-depth knowledge of the College’s academic programs and policies. The position involves one-on-one and group advising, virtual and in-person registration events, and assigned hours in both physical centers and the virtual environment.
Responsibilities
- Guide students in selecting programs of study and academic pathways aligned with their academic and career goals.
- Review and interpret placement results to support appropriate course selection.
- Advise students on strategies to meet communication and math proficiency requirements, as needed.
- Develop individualized academic plans in Navigate that align with students’ goals and expected completion timelines.
- Assess time management needs and recommend appropriate course formats to support student success.
- Participate in new student registration events.
- Connect students with relevant college resources and support services.
- Monitor and respond to advising inbox emails and voicemails in a timely manner.
- Document advising interactions and maintain accurate records in Navigate.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related field.
- Three years of experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management (or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining clear communication and collaboration with team members.
- Proficiency in using various electronic platforms to communicate, assist, and evaluate students.
- Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, rapidly growing, and multifunctional office environment.
- Strong presentation and instructional skills.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
- Must pass a CORI/SORI and/or National Background Check as a condition of employment.
