About the Role

Positions in the Parole Officer series perform professional work in the rehabilitation, monitoring, and control of adult inmates who have served time in prison and are to be released as parolees, and parolees who have already been released back into the community under the continued custody of the State and under conditions that permit reincarceration in the event parole requirements are violated.

This is the advanced trainee level (Level II) in the series. Positions at this level continue to receive training in the principles, methods, and techniques of parole officer work but also perform a greater variety of tasks involving increased work with inmates, parolees, potential employers, families, and other agency personnel. These tasks primarily focus on obtaining and substantiating information regarding housing, employment, treatment plans, and related matters. Work is initially conducted under close supervision, which becomes more relaxed as the worker progresses.

Responsibilities

• Interview inmates, parolees, families, employers, and other agency personnel to gather and analyze information.
• Describe facts and events accurately and logically analyze needs.
• Help individuals understand the nature of their problems and the consequences of their actions.
• Guide individuals toward changing or retaining certain behaviors.
• Apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in daily work.
• Prepare a variety of reports.
• Interact and communicate effectively with diverse groups of people.

Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

• Legal Authorization to Work: Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
• Basic Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, including a minimum of twelve semester credit hours in behavioral sciences such as psychology, sociology, social work, counseling, or criminal justice.
• General Experience: Six months of progressively responsible professional work experience in counseling or similar roles designed to help individuals, couples, families, or groups address personal, social, behavioral, educational, or other concerns. Experience must demonstrate the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a client/counselor relationship.
  • Interview people to obtain and analyze information.
  • Logically analyze and identify needs.
  • Help people understand problems and consequences of actions.
  • Guide individuals toward behavioral changes.
  • Apply laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups.
• Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
• Background Check and Drug Screening: Applicants conditionally offered employment will be subject to an intensive background check and drug screening, as required by federal, state, or local laws, or departmental policy. Drug testing must be paid for by the applicant.
• Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Compliance: Federal law prohibits hiring or promoting anyone who may have contact with inmates if they:
  • Have engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution.
  • Have been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, threats, or coercion, or where the victim did not consent or was unable to consent.
  • Have been civilly or administratively adjudicated for such conduct.
  • Have been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of such allegations.

Pay

The starting monthly salary is at the minimum advertised rate of pay for this position.
