About the role

Responsibilities
- Oversees and participates in the development of the Park Maintenance and Urban Forestry division workplans.
- Participates in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, work plans, reports, policies and procedures.
- Develops, implements, assigns and evaluates work activities, projects and programs for effectiveness and efficiency; modifies programs, policies and procedures as appropriate.
- Prepares budgets for the areas of responsibility; assists in budget implementation; participates in forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Plans, organizes and schedules activities related to maintenance; establishes work priorities involving maintenance, repair, and purchases/replacements; plans and schedules maintenance/repair activities; develops programs for routine and preventive maintenance of all assets.
- Attends meetings with outside agencies and organizations to help develop solutions to problems or issues of mutual concern; participates in outside community groups and professional groups and committees; provides technical assistance, as needed.
- Researches and prepares technical and administrative reports; prepares written correspondence.
- Receives, researches, and responds to the more complex public relations problems.
- Selects, trains, provides for the professional development, and work evaluation of assigned personnel, and works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures.
- Serves as the Department's liaison staff member to the Parks & Recreation Commission.
- Attend meetings and present information to the City Council, various committees and commissions, and citizen organizations as required.
- Interprets and applies applicable regulations, requirements and policies related to assigned area.
- Recommends and enforces safety measures and programs; ensures that records are properly maintained.
- Responds to or coordinates interdepartmental responses to inquiries, concerns, suggestions and complaints in a timely and professional manner.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Serves in various emergency response roles as required and be available for unplanned emergency events 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Desirable Qualifications
- Knowledge of: Operational and maintenance services and activities of the assigned areas.
- Techiques, tools and equipment used in park maintenance and urban forestry fields.
- Principles, administration, and practices of park maintenance and urban forestry fields.
- Principles and practices of municipal budget preparation, monitoring, and administration.
- Principles of supervision, training, and performance management.
- Project and contract management practices in a public agency setting.
- P Practices of researching issues, evaluating alternatives, and making sound recommendations.
- Professional level writing techniques, including proper grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
- Effective supervisory and leadership techniques.
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of high school or equivalent GED is required.
- Six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in facility and park maintenance, landscaping, irrigation, tree trimming, tree removal, commercial equipment operation, at least two of which must be in a supervisory/lead position required.
- A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in construction management, public administration or closely related field is desirable.
