About the role
Supervises the activity of jail staff in the custody, security, and transportation of inmates at the County Jail during assigned shift.
Responsibilities
- Supervises, plans, coordinates, and directs the work and activities of assigned staff
- Confers regularly with Captains and/or other supervisors to communicate concerns and receive orders
- Reviews activity log and confers with previous shift supervisors to determine the status of activities
- Prepares shift schedules, approves the use of vacation time, monitors schedules to maintain minimum staffing levels, and order staff in as needed
- Ensures adherence to procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and prisoner activities
- Identifies and analyzes staff problems and recommends or implements solutions
- Conducts inspections of staff, equipment, and documentation of activities to ensure operational readiness and adherence to standards
- Provides supervisory officers with information required to evaluate operations and efficiency
- Maintains motivation and promotes cooperation among staff
- Aids in staffing decisions within the assigned functions including hiring, training, retention, preparing and conducting performance evaluations, administering discipline, monitoring workload, delegation of assignments, and other personnel matters affecting staff
- Monitors work performance and training progress of individuals, in person and through documentary review, to ensure execution of orders, adherence to work procedures, and compliance with legal requirements
- Authorizes staff use of leave benefits
- Participates in meetings with departmental personnel, outside agencies, and other County departments to ensure that departmental matters are communicated and reviewed
- Maintains current knowledge of professionally-related matters
- Attends training, seminars, and conferences to obtain updated information and establish professional relationships
- Provides consultation to staff on routine matters, such as interpretation of rules, and provides guidance in handling difficult and sensitive situations
- Investigates allegations of misconduct involving subordinates
- Responds to questions and complaints from the public, assigned personnel, County departments, and other agencies
- In the absence of the Jail Lieutenant, exercises delegated authority and responsibilities of that position
- May be assigned to cover Patrol Sergeant responsibilities, and may be assigned to assist the Detective Division
Requirements
- Citizen of the United States
- Associate degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in a law enforcement or closely related field
- Twenty-one (21) years of age or older upon appointment
- Five (5) years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer
- Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification
- Completion of basic recruit school
Qualifications
- Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test
- Residency within 45-minute response time by car to the courthouse upon appointment, and maintain such residency thereafter during employment
- No felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted
