Parks Maintenance Technician

Under general supervision, this position maintains public parks, facilities, and equipment, assists with department activities, programs, and events, and supports construction functions for the Village of Ruidoso. Non-exempt FLSA.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains Village parks, recreational facilities, and public grounds.
  • Performs various janitorial duties which include sweeping, mopping, cleaning restroom fixtures.
  • Applies cleaning agents and graffiti removal chemicals.
  • Mows, trims, rakes pine needles, removes litter or debris from parks and public grounds.
  • Maintains athletic fields on a regular basis as well as for special events, including cleaning restrooms, picking up trash, and emptying trash receptacles.
  • Applies fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides on public grounds.
  • Maintains department equipment and vehicles.
  • Uses various hand tools for park improvements (e.g., shovels, rakes, saws).
  • Assists the department with a variety of activities, programs, and events.
  • Demonstrates community pride by diligent work performance to provide top-quality public facilities.
  • Assists with initial start-up and maintenance of the swimming pool, including power washing, citrus washing, painting, operating filter equipment, and waxing slides.
  • Ensures accurate and timely submission of time records reflecting actual hours worked.
  • Reports any on-the-job injury to a supervisor immediately.
  • Complies with all Village of Ruidoso policies and procedures, including the Personnel Manual and Procurement Policy.
  • Reports suspected fraud and/or abuse to the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Economic Activities or Village Manager.
  • Reports any suspected harassment immediately and ensures appropriate actions are taken.
  • Attends meetings, classes, and workshops.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and two years of manual labor experience required; experience in building maintenance preferred.
  • Must pass criminal history checks, drug/alcohol test, and comply with the Village's "Drug Free" Policy.
  • Must maintain a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and meet minimum insurability requirements as required by law; MVD background checks conducted on an ongoing basis.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico motor vehicle operator's permit of appropriate classification and endorsement as required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations, general construction techniques, and maintenance and repair of landscaping equipment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining working relationships with citizens, employees, supervisors, and management; use and operation of landscaping tools.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition and stamina for extended periods of sitting, standing, or walking; adapt to inclement weather and flexible work schedules; work in stressful environments.

Physical Demands

  • May require lifting boxes, equipment, and occasional moving or adjustment of office furniture.
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or moving up to 80 pounds.
  • Frequent squatting, bending, or twisting required.

Work Environment

  • May work irregular schedules, long hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be called in to work during off hours when needed.
  • Noise level could be moderate to loud.
  • May work outside in adverse weather conditions.

Travel Requirements

  • Limited travel for activities such as meetings, classes, and workshops in and out of the area.
  • Overnight travel as required.
